A Parisian Masterpiece: the Unknown Volume of Plutarch's Lives

Plutarch's Lives of Romulus and Cato the Younger Illuminated by Three Artists
Januar 12, 2021

This magnificent manuscript has only recently been identified, miraculously in near-perfect condition. Commissioned by Philippa of Guelders for her son Antoine of Lorraine, it was likely meant as educational literature for the prince, one of a set of manuscripts that now reside in Vienna at the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek. Though the other manuscripts show the hand of Jean Pichore, this exceptional piece shows three artists' styles: the Master of Philippa of Guelders, Jean Coene IV, and a third artist from the Pichore circle.
