The 'Epistres d'Ovide' in its full majesty
November 3, 2020

This dazzling manuscript was presented at TEFAF Online New York 2020 by Dr. Jörn Günther Rare Books AG. The 'Epistres d'Ovide', translated by Octovien de Saint-Gelais and illustrated by the Master of the Chronique Scandaleuse for Queen Anne de Bretagne, contains five translated poems from Ovid concerning women of myth and legend who have been left by their heroic lovers. With three additional French poems and miniatures featuring the queen herself, this manuscript is simply enthralling in its narrative and artistic achievement.
