Celebrate Christmas in the presence of unrivaled illuminated manuscripts

Dr. Jörn Günther Rare Books will open the gallery doors to commemorate the festive season in the company of exceptional illuminated manuscripts. 

 

Our Christmas exhibition, situated in our gallery in the heart of Basel's historical old town, offers a unique opportunity to see rare illuminated manuscripts in detail. Among other highlights, the exhibit will feature the Hours of Catherine of Aragon, an exceptional Book of Hours gifted to one of Europe’s most significant historical figures.

 

 

Join us for two special themed tours on aspects of Christmas Iconography. 

 

The Three Kings

Thursday, December 12, 4 pm - 6 pm

Dr. Mireia Castaño will provide a guided tour and take a closer look at the Adoration of the Magi motif in medieval manuscripts. 

Join us for tea and cookies from 4 pm. The tour will start at 5 pm.

The Shepherds

Monday, December 16, 4pm – 6 pm. 

Dr. Bodo Brinkmann will provide a guided tour and take a closer look at the Annuciation to the Shepherds motif in medieval manuscripts. 

Join us for tea and cookies from 4 pm. The tour will start at 5 pm.

Our exquisite medieval manuscripts and miniatures will be on display from:

December 10 to December 18, 2024, Monday to Friday.

 

Our opening times are:

10 am-12 noon, and 2 pm-5 pm.
