During this advent season, Dr. Jörn Günther Rare Books will be opening the doors to the gallery at the heart of Basel to exhibit some extremely
rare examples of illumination and decoration from the middle ages and
the Renaissance. This years’ highlights include the Histoire Ancienne, a
colossal decorated chronicle probably made for the French king at the end
of the 14th century, and the Crawford Hours, a tiny devotional
masterpiece. The Flemish Psalter manuscript shown in the photo above
must also be regarded as an outstanding masterpiece, which - in all
probability – was made for a beguine.
The illuminations found in these medieval books are the best examples of
art from this period, and treasures like these are rarely seen outside of
national collections and impressive private libraries.
