Boccaccio, der grosse italienische Dichter und berühmte Humanist, verfasste diese Sammlung von Erzählungen zwischen 1355-1360. Sie war als echte Enzyklopädie historischer Biographien gedacht und handelt vom Schicksal, Glück und Unglück berühmter Personen, beginnend mit dem biblischen Adam, über mythologische und historische Figuren der Antike und abschliessend mit mehreren von Boccaccios Florentiner Zeitgenossen des 14. Jahrhunderts. Die französische Übersetzung stammt von Laurent de Premierfait (um 1380-1418), einem gebildeten Dichter, der für seine Übersetzungen von Livius, Boccaccio und Cicero bekannt war.
Diese Handschrift ist eine bemerkenswerte Ergänzung zu den Pariser Luxusbüchern, die man allgemein mit dem Künstler Maître François verbindet. Es gab mehrere Künstler in seinem Umkreis und ihre Oeuvres sind bisher nicht vollständig belegt. Nach neuerer Forschung wurden der Meister, Maître François, und der Hauptmitarbeiter in seiner Werkstatt identifiziert als ein Team von Vater und Sohn, die beide François le Barbier hiessen (père und fils).
