The influence of the Albrech Dürer on the spread of Renaissance artistic practices north of the Alps cannot be overstated; this collection of illustrated texts is the perfect example of this intellectual blossoming.
Dürer's first work in this Sammelband is one of the earliest mathematical works published in German. This first edition covers topics such as plane curves and spirals, squaring the circle, and pyramids and cylinders, concluding with a section on Platonic and Archimedean solids.
The second work is the second issue of a first edition treatise on the fortification of cities, castles, and marketplaces. Considering the perceived threat of an Ottoman invasion, this was an important issue in Dürer's era, and his designs were actually put to use in Nuremberg, Strasbourg, and Schaffhausen. Added at the time of binding exclusively to our copy as a fold-out is Dürer's famous woodcut of a fortress under siege, adding a superb finishing touch to this codex.
The third text is Dürer's masterpiece on human proportion, the first application of anthropometry to aesthetics. Fascinated by developments in Italian art theory, Dürer explored rules on proportion based on the architectural treatise of the Roman Vitruvius, his own knowledge of classical models, and the works of Leone Battista Alberti and Leonardo da Vinci. The original drawings for this work are still preserved in the artist's Dresden Sketchbook.
