A Formidable Choir Book in its Original Binding, 1550

An illuminated Antiphonal used for the Divine Office, including a comprehensive Proprium de Tempore and fifteen historiated initials. Made for the Franciscan community in Soresina near Cremona.
Illuminated manuscript on vellum, initials alternately in red or blue, with 24 initials painted or with filigree pen-flourishes, and 15 historiated initials of varying sizes on gold ground. Binding: Original 16th century dark brown calf over wooden board binding, 540 x 385 mm, blind-stamped with central- and side-bosses on front cover, with two additional bosses on rear cover, corner copper pieces on both sides stamped with ornamental motifs edge guards on tail. (Lamb of Christ, initials HIS), spiked to protect and to balance the volume in use.
