Curious Soldier in a Landscape, 1350-1400
CHF8000.00
This powerful initial D with a sturdy foot soldier was made in Bologna, c. 1350-1400. The initial D opens the Response for the Office at Matins on Sexagesima Sunday (2nd Sunday before Ash Wednesday). In the text, God tells Noah (Dixit Dominus ad Noe) that he will destroy all living creatures on earth and he orders Noah to build an ark (Genesis 6:13-14). But why is a soldier depicted here?
Miniature. Tempera and ink on vellum.
Leaf: 525 x 370 mm, initial: 140 x 135 mm.
