Rodericus Zamorensis' Speigel des menschlichen Lebens
In conjunction with our selection for SLAM's August E-Rendez-Vous - connected by the theme of Moral and Artistic Guidance - the Book of the Month for August is the Spiegel des Menschlichen Lebens by Rodericus Zamorensis.
This popular work on how to live a virtuous life provides rich information on the society and culture of the Middle Ages, including chapters on courtiers, heralds, notaries, popes, and canons, among many other secular and clerical positions. Because of this version's attractive illustration, it was considered the finest book of the printer, Günther Zainer, and the German translator, Heinrich Steinhöwel, is well known for his other works, transforming Latin and Italian literature into German.
With its reworking of spiritual advice, this work compliments the three items chosen for exhibition at SLAM's August e-Rendez-Vous event.
