The Prose Romance of Fierrabras
In conjunction with our selection for SLAM's November E-Rendez-Vous - connected by the theme of Conflict - the Book of the Month for November is Fierrabras, translated by Duke Johann II von Pfalz-Simmern.
The story of Fierrabras is one of duelling, romance, and religious rivarly. Emperor Charlemagne (742-814) pursues the Saracen king Balan and his giant son Fierrabras, eventually defeated by French knights. This old chanson de geste has been adapted into German by Johann II, Count Palatine and Duke of Simmern (1492-1557). Just like Emperor Maximilian with his Theuerdank, one of the three items chosen for exhibition at SLAM's November e-Rendez-Vous event, Johann chose prestigious book projects as part of his aristocratic self-fashioning.
