Lavish in its Contemporary Colouring: The Lives of the Desert Fathers
This fascinating work combines the biographies of the so-called Desert Fathers, early Christian hermits who retreated from normal life to practice ascetism in deserts. This edition, based on the earliest verions written in the 3rd or 4th centuries, contains delightful woodcut illlustrations, heightened with contemporary colouring. With over 270 woodcuts from 204 individual blocks, and an opening illustration of six hermits in a landscape, this artistic style fits with the variety of the three items chosen for exhibition at SLAM's October e-Rendez-Vous event.
