Obsequiale for the First Bishop of Cuba Acquired by Two Bruges Institutions

Confessor to Charles V's sister and first Bishop of Santiago de Cuba, Jan de Witte is an eminent figure of Flemish history

Now in the possession of the Musea Brugge and Openbare Bibliotheek Brugge, this delicate manuscript is a dedicatory liturgy and mass for the passing of Bishop Jan de Witte. For its small size and specific use, this illumination of the crucifixion with the bishop kneeling in piety before Christ, is truly outstanding. The sweeping landscape contains aspects of the fortified city of Bruges itself, and the narrative quality of this painting along with the delight in meticulously- and masterfully-rendered details are strongly reminiscent of the great painter Simon Bening.

We are delighted to have been a part of this wonderful manuscript's history!
