This outstanding, beautifully executed miniature is a cutting from a page of a large Choirbook. The style is clearly Lombard and recalls artists working in the environment of Stefano da Verona, Michelino da Besozzo, and the Master of the Vitae Imperatorum. This large cutting is a wonderful example of the style of Italian illumination influenced by the international trend in medieval art that is called the ‘soft style’ or International Gothic style. At the court of Milan, artists who had collaborated with French, German, or Bohemian artists engaged their skills in outstanding creative production. It is evident that our artist had also seen and adapted compositions of artworks that were en vogue north of the Alps.
Although we are not yet able to clearly associate an œuvre with our brilliant painter, he is certainly to be found in the circle of artists such as Stefano da Verona, Michelino da Besozzo, and the Master of the Vitae Imperatorum.
