Dr. Jörn Günther - Rarebooks / Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts and miniatures

When the début catalogue was published in 1993 the business newspaper Handelsblatt commented: "The bitter gap which important Jewish firms left behind since their emigration is gradually beginning to close and what is missing in terms of inventory and company capital is balanced by meticulous scholarship and help from the bank. The Hamburg antiquarian book dealer Jörn Günther belongs to this new generation of dealers who align their businesses to a scholarly basis. Already his first catalogue, published several weeks ago and edited by himself, was a sweeping success. Of the 17 manuscripts and 18 miniatures of the Middle Ages which are described by him with precise understatement and illustrated with brilliant colour reproductions only ten items are still available. Upon thorough review of this catalogue one realises that only a minor portion of works deriving from auctions has been included. The major part of the offer presented in this catalogue comes from private hands, thus the historical dealer's postulate 'from private hands to private hands' is revived."

The Acornati Hours, presented in our début catalogue. This book of hours was presumably created between 1483 and 1486 on the occasion of a wedding among two of the foremost Milan patrician families, the Arconati and the Vitali. A jewel of high Renaissance manuscript illumination attributed to Cristoforo and Ambrogio de Predis, whose work is highly influenced by Leonardo da Vinci.

Schon sein erster, vor wenigen Wochen publizierter und selbst verfaßter Katalog war ein durchschlagender Erfolg. Also the second catalogue, this time devoted to the collecting field of early printed books, was positively reviewed in the press, paying a special account to the quality of the catalogue entries: "As lavishly produced as his first work - illustrated in full colours throughout, cloth-bound, stitched and printed on heavy Luxosatin - the offer this time presents 55 incunables and early printed books, which are just as rare as they are significant. The catalogue entries are by Manfred von Arnim, the former head librarian of the library of Otto Schäfer, and of great quality and readability throughout. The fact that books from all fields of knowledge are assembled here has an effect on the nature of the catalogue entries: Different from many dealer catalogues they do not require previous knowledge about the respective fields from the reader, but elucidate the background of each work related to cultural history and the history of the human mind in a concise way.

		One of the 44 scenic woodcuts by the Columna Master from the first edition of Ulrich von Richenthal's account of the Council of Constance, printed in Augsburg by Anton Sorg in 1483. This copy with fine contemporary workshop colouring was offered in catalogue no. 2

("Ebenso aufwendig hergestellt wie das Erstlingswerk - durchgehend farbig illustriert, leinengebunden, fadengeheftet und auf schwerem Luxosatin gedruckt - verzeichnet das Angebot dieses Mal 55 ebenso seltene wie prominente Inkunabeln und Frühdrucke. Die Beschreibungen stammen allesamt von Manfred von Arnim, dem ehemaligen Leiter der Bibliothek Otto Schäfer, und sind durchgehend von großer Qualität und Lesbarkeit. Die Tatsache, daß sich hier Bücher aus allen Fach- und Wissensgebieten vereinigt finden, wirkt sich auch auf die Art der Beschreibungen aus: Anders als viele Handelskataloge setzen sie beim Leser kein Vorwissen aus den jeweiligen Gebieten voraus, sondern rollen den kultur- und geistesgeschichtlichen Hintergrund des einzelnen Werkes in konziser und nicht zu ausschweifender Form auf.")

In 1998 the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung commented on the achievements submitted in catalogue no. 5: "In this catalogue a kaleidoscope of German medieval manuscripts of extraordinary diversity and wealth is unfolded. Günther feels an affinity for older models like the catalogue of Jacques Rosenthal, published in 1929, which presented German manuscripts and early printed books. Nothing comparable has been offered on the market since and will hardly come up again in the foreseeable future, if one takes into account that the famous Stammheim Missal as the highlight of the catalogue is meanwhile in the Getty Museum.

		One of the remarkable facets in the kaleidoscope of German medieval and Renaissance manuscripts presented in catalogue no. 5: The so-called 'Loos Buch' by Paul Pambst, a fortune telling book, dated 1546 and including 115 miniatures. The manuscript shows the unidentified monogram DHP of the artist and was probably illuminated at the court of Prague.

Günther weiß sich älteren Vorbildern verpflichtet wie dem 1929 erschienenen Katalog von Jacques Rosenthal, der Handschriften und Frühdrucke in deutscher Sprache vorstellte. Seitdem ist nichts Vergleichbares mehr auf dem Kunstmarkt angeboten worden und wird auch schwerlich in absehbarer Zeit wieder auftauchen, wenn man bedenkt, daß das berühmte Stammheimer Missale als Glanzlicht des Kataloges sich inzwischen im Getty Museum befindet.")

Recently our latest catalogues on the collecting area of manuscript paintings and on the era of early printing of which online-versions are available on this site were met with acknowledging response: "The sixth catalogue of the antiquarian book business of Dr. Jörn Günther, based in Hamburg, is exclusively devoted to single leaves and miniatures from illuminated manuscripts. The introduction of the catalogue gives a thorough account of the history of collecting medieval miniatures and single leaves, the initial stages of which date back more than 400 years. The works were researched in meticulous detail, while one attached great importance to tracking down provenances and reconstructing the art-historical, textual and liturgical backgrounds.

		The culmination of catalogue no. 6: Four full-page miniatures from a genealogical chronicle of the Genoese Fornari family, executed by a ligurian artist in the mid-sixteenth century with remarkable refinement and love of detail.

		A copy with ravishing contemporary colouring of the first printed play in the vernacular and the high-water mark of Ulm woodcut illustration offered in our catalogue 7: The first edition of the German translation of the Eunuchus by the Roman playwright Terence printed in Ulm at Conrad Dinckmut's shop in 1486.
